Customers of licensed premises, pubs, clubs, and off-licences in North Kesteven will find it easier to show proof of age after changes being introduced so that ID on phones can be used.
Following changes to licensing regulations and guidance, proof of age required at premises selling alcohol can now be provided in digital form, available through validated third-party applications.
Each time that identification is required for a purchase of alcohol, the customer will have to complete an authentication process using biometrics or a PIN code. The app will then generate a QR code which lasts for around 30 seconds.
This process will make age checks quicker, easier and more secure for customers and staff. Certified digital services check that an ID is genuine and belongs to the person presenting it, which can help reduce the risk of fake or borrowed identification going undetected.
Customers can choose to use the certified app on their phone to prove they are over 18 when buying alcohol, without showing physical ID.
However, premises can still insist on proof of age being provided by the currently recognised means such as a passport, driving licence, PASS accreditation (National Proof of Age Standards Scheme), or other recognised proof of age document.
Councillor Mark Smith, whose Executive Board oversight includes environment and public protection: “This is a positive move. It gives residents a quicker, easier, and more secure way to prove their age when making purchases, while helping local businesses reduce the risk of fake or borrowed identification being used.”
