The new smart junction planned for the Scawby and Broughton crossroads has moved into its next phase - with detailed engineering work confirming road widening will be needed to safely accommodate the upgraded layout.
That work has also identified an existing Anglian Water pipe within the construction area which now needs to be rerouted before construction can begin.
As a result, work is now expected to start in early autumn.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “As we’ve moved from outline plans into the detailed engineering stage, it’s confirmed that parts of the junction need widening to properly accommodate the new smart traffic signal layout.
“That process has also identified existing water infrastructure within the construction area which now needs to be rerouted before work can begin.
“This is exactly why detailed design work matters. We are building a long-term solution for one of the area’s key routes and it is important we get that work right from the start."
The new junction will use smart traffic signals designed to respond to live traffic conditions, helping keep traffic moving on the A18 while improving safety for drivers entering and leaving the crossroads.
The wider carriageway layout will allow the new junction to operate safely and effectively, with the signals prioritising the busiest routes and avoiding unnecessary delays when side roads are clear.
Cllr Neil Poole, cabinet member for highways, added: “We know residents are keen to see progress at the junction and we appreciate people bearing with us a little longer while this preparatory work takes place.
“The smart signals are specifically designed to keep the A18 moving by responding to real traffic conditions rather than fixed timers, reducing unnecessary stopping while improving safety at the crossroads.”
