This week, Year 6 pupils from across 11 primary schools in West Lindsey will take part in Lincoln City Foundation’s IMPowered workshops, a programme designed to support young people as they prepare for their transition from primary to secondary school.
Through collaboration between the Gainsborough Aspiration project, Lincoln City Foundation, West Lindsey District Council and funding from the Lincolnshire School Games, the programme will support more than 300 pupils. The sessions will bring together pupils who are likely to attend the same secondary schools in September, helping them meet new peers and build confidence ahead of this important step.
The activities, that will focus on teamwork, resilience, confidence and communication skills, will take place during week commencing Monday 13 July in primary schools across the district.
Hannah Lane, Community Officer for Sport and Physical Activity at West Lindsey District Council, co-organised the workshops.
She said: “The School Games funding has really given young residents a mixture of opportunities this year which have supported transition alongside other local sportlight opportunities for schools. These workshops are a great way to build their confidence and make the transition a little easier, and at the same, get active.”
Angie Waplington, Education Locality Lead and Gainsborough Aspiration Project Lead, sad: “We hope the IMPowered workshops help to ease anxieties and reduce worries that some children may experience over the summer holidays.”
The workshops form part of a shared commitment to supporting children and families across the local area, helping young people feel prepared, connected and positive about the next stage of their education.
Cllr Owen Bierley, Chairman of the Thriving Council committee at West Lindsey District Council, said: “The future of our communities depends on the opportunities we give our young people today. These IMPowered workshops will help ensure school pupils in our district feel supported at an important stage of their education.
“We are proud to support initiatives like this that help young people in West Lindsey thrive and feel prepared for the exciting opportunities ahead.”
