Solar panels have been installed at St John’s Market in Scunthorpe, reducing energy bills and future-proofing the building against rising costs.
The installation includes 249 panels, creating a 127kWp system expected to save around ÂŁ8,100 a year on energy.
The project has been co-funded through the Towns Fund and delivered in partnership with North Lincolnshire Community Energy.
Lower running costs will help protect the long-term future of the market and support the traders and small businesses based there.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a straightforward investment – cut the bills, strengthen the building, and back the businesses that rely on it.
“At a time when energy costs are volatile, generating power on-site makes sense. It reduces overheads and helps keep the market competitive.
“And it’s exactly the right place for solar – on the roof of an existing building, not taking up good agricultural land or open countryside.”
Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment and strategy, said: “This is about using technology to reduce costs and make our buildings more efficient.
“It’s a practical investment that delivers savings year after year while improving how we run our assets.”
The installation forms part of a wider programme to improve energy efficiency across council buildings and reduce ongoing operating costs.
